Fishing Net
–Wurt
The Fishing Net is a hand slot item that requires 1 Rope, 2 Rocks and 3 Silk to craft and a Science Machine to prototype.
The Fishing Net is used to retrieve both items and creatures from the ocean. When used, the net will be thrown towards the cursor, and any items it catches will be placed at the user's feet. Using the Fishing Net at all, even if it hasn't caught anything, consumes 1 durability.
When caught, the Fishing Net will reduce the weight of Ocean Fish down to their minimum, preventing any additional Fish Meat that may have been harvested otherwise. Innately larger fish will also cost an additional ? durability on the Fishing Net.
Critters caught by the net will be stunned, though the only critter that lives in the ocean is the Puffin. Anything on the edge of the shore is fair game, however.
Tips[edit | edit source]
- Crafting a Fishing Net can be very useful early on. As it allows you to grab items that would otherwise require a boat or grass raft. Such as Messages in bottles or Driftwood pieces.
- It can also be used to craft ocean fish for easy and quick food. Mudfish can spawn near shore and be caught for regular-sized Fish Meat, which has equivalent healing power to unnerfed butterfly wings.
- The Fishing Net can be used in place of a lazy forager or lazy deserter when harvesting salt or sea sludge. making it easier to collect items that may have fallen on the far side of their resource node.
- While significantly faster than traditional ocean fishing. The latter may still be preferable in many cases. Ironically, Fishing Nets will quickly break when used to catch fish, while Sea fishing rods have no durability and floats/lures can theoretically last forever so long as you don't snap your line. Being able to catch high-weight fish also means that you will get more meat per fish caught on average, if you're looking for Quantity over Quality.
- The latter point is mute, however, in scenarios where a fish's weight is irrelevant. Such as catching Wobsters for recipes. Catching Ice Breams or Scorching Sunfish for seasonal temperature control. And catching Spittlefish for crafting.
- Since the Fishing Net can only be used on Ocean Tiles, it cannot be used to retrieve items from Cave Holes.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The Fishing Net was introduced in the Calm Before the Storm update.
- Fishing Nets are an unused item in vanilla DST. They were added to the game at the very beginning of the Return of Them update chain.
- Webber's quote "Maybe we'll catch some antchovies!" is also a reference to unused content from Return of Them. Antchovies are an unused fish that could be caught with the unused fishing net in early versions of shoals.
