Moonmaw Dragonfly, often referred as just Moonmaw, is a seasonal boss that is only able to spawn during Summer under a Full Moon or Moon Storm. When all the circumstances for it to spawn are met, it will spawn in place of the Wilting Dragonfly. It spawns on its back, having recently fallen out of the sky. 8 Glass Lavae orbit around it.
There is an enormous light that's surrounds it. This is not very noticeable due to spawning when nights are bright from the Full Moon. The aura around her inflicts Enlightenment, which can spawn Gestalts at high Sanity.
On death it drops eight Meat, Enlightened Scales, and three Inert Infused Moon Chunk (which will drop 18 Infused Moon Shards when mined).
It takes 4 Sleep Darts to put Moonmaw Dragonfly to sleep. It is immune to freezing, and has an innate 80% resistance to explosives.
Attacks[edit | edit source]
| Attack | Description |
|---|---|
|
Moonmaw's Glass Lavae will spin violently if a target gets too close, damaging and knocking back those who get close. |
|
After a bit of time has passed, one of the Glass Lavae will float to the direction of Moonmaw's target and attempt to attack it. This increases to two Glass Lavae attacking at once in Phase 3. |
|
Slams the ground creating a line of Unstable Moon Glass that can damage you multiple times. |
|
Forms small glass shards that it will shoot like projectiles, one after the other. |
|
Summon damaging massive crystals from the sky, similar to Celestial Champion. |
|
Slams the ground multiple times, dealing damage in a small AoE. Can only be triggered after Moonmaw is hit, working as a counter attack. |
Fight[edit | edit source]
Phase 1[edit | edit source]
In this phase, Moonmaw Dragonfly periodically does a ground slam, working similarly to Bearger's reworked slam in Uncompromising Mode, making multiple Unstable Moon Glasses, basically circular hitboxes with the appearance of mineable Infused Moon Glass, in a linear pattern stemming from Moonmaw and going up to the targeted player, dealing 50 damage when hit by; and multiple instances of 50 damage when the crystals break mere seconds after being cast. However, the main attack of the first phase is the 8 Glass Lavae slowly spinning around Moonmaw. The said Lavae remain inactive until the player gets within its attack range. After such, they'll start rapidly spinning around Moonmaw, dealing 40 damage 2-5 in a rather short time before knocking back the player, even if they have Knockback immunity. This attack can be predicted as Moonmaw puts its opened fists on the ground before doing so. After some time passes, one of its Glass Lavae will be sent after the player, piercing the ground in an explosion like effect that deals 25 damage to anyone around the impact area. After which, it'll be stuck in the said ground, giving the player an opportunity to attack, and break the said lavae. After all the lavae are broken, phase 2 begins.
Phase 2[edit | edit source]
During this phase, since Moonmaw has no Glass Lavae, it'll be more easily attackable, but it will also have new attacks available to use. In one of these attacks, Moonmaw will slam the ground directly below it with both hands, summoning a large amount of temporary Enlightening Snares from Celestial Champion Phase 3 from the sky, dealing 50 damage on impact, and despawning a few seconds after landing. The other new attack begins with Moonmaw puting its opened fists on the ground, forming 8 small glass shards that begin to circle Moonmaw; being sent after the player one after another. This can be dodged by stepping to the side and continuing to walk until all glass shards are gone. There is also a counter attack, where Moonmaw will stomp her legs, doing so multiple times in a short period of time. Each stomp deals 25 damage, doing a total of 125 damage. This can be dodged by simply stepping back. The Unstable Moon Glasse slam attack from Phase 1 is also present in this phase, and since it has the lowest cooldown, it'll be used the most; it can be dodged by sidestepping in a circle around Moonmaw. While it is possible to get up to 6 hits on Moonmaw before needing to dodge, with the help of a Walking Cane and after dodging its slam attack, it can only be done effectively if the player is keeping track of the cooldown of other special attacks, plus also paying attention if the counter attack is about to be triggered, making 3-4 hits much safer.
Phase 3 and 4[edit | edit source]
When Moonmaw's Health reaches below half (being 4000 HP) her Glass Lavae will be back; which can be dealt with the same way as phase one, with the difference that two Glass Lavae will be sent after the player at once, instead of one. After destroying all the Glass Lavae again, Moonmaw's attack pattern will go back to the pattern of Phase 2. If Moonmaw somehow gets lowered to 50% Health before losing all of its Glass Lavae and moving on to Phase 2, it'll skip to Phase 3, sending all Glass Lavae it had after the player at once, and spawn another 8 Glass Lavae to form a ring around Moonmaw.
Tips[edit | edit source]
- Moonmaw Dragonfly is highly destructive and should not be fought near your base.
- Having a Walking Cane or other speed boost is highly recommended.
- Players riding Beefalo can end up becoming stunlocked for extended periods of time, receiving massive damage.
- Having ways to reduce sanity during the fight (I.E Shadow Armor) can be necessary to stave off Gestalts.
- It's recommended for the player to attack 3-4 times between dodging, paying attention to its counter-attack telegraph.
- Alternatively, it's possible to attack up to 6 hits on Moonmaw before needing to dodge. To do this, it is recommended to get the help of a Walking Cane and rigorous rote memorization of its attack and special attack intervals.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Even if Moonmaw Dragonfly is a transformed form of Wilting Dragonfly, the corruption from the moon changed her enough to the point where it's now referred as "It" instead of "She" and is not considered an insect anymore.
- Not being considered an insect means that Moonmaw Dragonfly won't receive any extra damage or AOE effect from Bug Zappers.
- Wormwood's quote for it is a reference to one of UM's Community Veterans, WormiestWood.
- Its lavae orbiting attack is the only attack in Uncompromising Mode that ignores Knockback Immunity, pushing players away to avoid stunlocking them. The only exception to this are players riding a Beefalo, and Woodie's Weremoose form.
- Moonmaw Dragonfly was added in the Fight And Flight update.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- Sometimes there are issues with Moonmaw Dragonfly and Wilting Dragonfly spawning, like Moonmaw spawning more than once in Summer, neither spawning during the season, etc.
