Hello, family.

Winky

Rats are neutral animals that spawn in groups next to the player. Similar to Splumonkeys, they will steal items they find on the ground and carry them to their Burrow. A Rat's attacks also drains the player's max health.

Brain.png Behavior[edit | edit source]

After day 30, Rat Raids will begin to happen if the player has a dirty base. The player will occasionally receive warnings that their base is encouraging Rats to spawn through character quotes and Rat noises in the distance. When a Raid happens, a group of Rats and Pack Rats begin to spawn in waves. These Rats will rush to the closest items and take them, prioritizing Equipable items and Gems, and also eating Food off the ground if they are not focused on getting an item, with the exception of Horrible Food like Pig Skin, in which case Rats will treat it as normal items. After succesfully stealing items from a base, the Rats will go away in group to a random direction to eventually form a Rat Burrow.

In order to locate the Rat Burrow, the player must craft and use a Rat Mask to help guide them to a burrow, or follow the initial Rats, as it will always spawn in a random location at a fixed distance from where the raid happened. If the player fails to see where the rats went it can still find it by walking in a big circle around the place where the raid started. It will know the Rat Burrow is near when it starts to find rats roaming around the place.

Rats are afraid of ghosts and will attempt to run away from ghosts such as Pipspooks and Abigail, but they'll still attack back if they're hit by one.

Spear.png Hunting[edit | edit source]

Rats are tricky creatures to fight due to their big numbers and Pig-like kiting patterns which will force the player to tank a lot of hits if it desires to fight in melee combat. Thankfully, both their health and damage are low and their attacks only stun the player every 1.5 seconds.

The best way to kill Rats, however, is through the use of traps. Note, however, that regular Traps will imprison them, but not kill them, as they will quickly escape when a player interacts with the Trap, and other Rats are also capable of gnawing through Traps that have imprisoned Rats in them, so Tooth Traps, Bramble Traps or Poison Jam will need to be used instead. Poison Jam is especially effective as it will attract any nearby Rats and kill them instantly. Each bottle of Poison Jam contains enough poison to kill 4 rats before being fully consumed. Other area of effect methods such as Abigail (after hitting a Rat), Weremoose Charge or Catapults are also really effective at dealing with Rats.

The max health reduction of their attacks isn't very significant, but can stack quickly and won't be mitigated by armor, making tanking a poor strategy. A Plague Mask or Rat Mask can be wore to prevent max health reduction. If the player does not have one it will have to use Booster Shot or sleep to recover the lost max health, but only if the max health reduction is below 25%.

Catcoons kill Rats in 1 hit. Rats take 1 Sleep Dart to sleep and 1 blast from an Ice Staff to freeze.

Prototype.png Tips[edit | edit source]

  • Wolfgang deals enough damage to one shot the Rats when wielding a weapon with 50 damage or more, and he can also throw Dumbells to get their aggro or outright killing them with the Heavy Hitter I & II skills, making it easier for him to combat Rats.
  • Tooth Traps, typically used as Hound defense, can be repurposed for Rat Raids, since attacking one will aggro the rest, it'll be easy to bait them to the traps.
  • Pigs and other Followers can be used to deal with Rats as they will help thin the horde.
  • Since Catcoons can kill rats in 1 hit, taming close Catcoons can be a very effective way to remove Rat Burrows, and living close to them can offer protection from Rat Raids.
  • You can still interact with an item that a Rat is holding as if it's still on the ground. This means that, if you can actually get close enough to them, you can pick back the item that the Rat stole, though this will first drop the item from the Rat's grasp, so holding Space is advised for both easier targeting and getting the item immediately as it drops.
    • This interaction also means that the item the Rat is holding can catch on fire and be destroyed. Though this also means that a big group of Rats can be killed via baiting them with items that burn for very long (Like Boards, Grass Tufts, etc.), then igniting one of the Rat's item and hitting it, causing nearby Rats with the flammable items to get close and start to also catch on fire until they all die.
      • If a Rat is killed while its item is on fire, the item will drop without being destroyed, burning or smoldering. But it can still begin to smolder due to close fires from other Rats.
