–Wathom examining an Ancient Statue

Wathom is one of the three available characters for Uncompromising Mode, and is the first to be also available as a standalone mod for Don't Starve Together. He is Maxwell's failed attempt at recreating a member of the Constant's Ancient Civilization.

Minimap Maxwell's Door.png Origin[edit | edit source]

A hunter with an uncontrollable surplus of energy, Wathom lives on after crawling out of the Abyss he was imprisoned in.

–Wathom's Curio Cabinet bio.

Wathom's backstory titled From the Abyss can be seen in the Compendium, by installing and enabling the Mods in Menu API.

The civilization that once occupied the ruins always piqued Maxwell's curiosity. Even he on the throne didn't know all the secrets buried within the Constant. Using dusted bones and nightmare fuel, the Shadow King breathed life into a mimic of the ancient race, with the purpose to understand those who came before them.

Wathom never knew anything other than dank caverns and pulsating ruins - and when he didn't provide the secrets that he was born to uncover, the only thing he knew from then on was the indefinite darkness of the Abyss, banished and forgotten. At least, until the fallen moon provided climbable cracks in the walls.

Wathom leaping at a spider.

Wathom will leap at his targets when attacking. The momentum of his leap causes him to slide past his target, potentially dodging attacks directed at him. Wathom has a base damage modifier of 2x, but is counteracted by the fact that Wathom's leap lasts about twice as long as any other character's normal swing. While leaping, Wathom jumps over any obstacles, including mobs and structures.

Wathom will start echolocating when in the dark, becoming able to see in the dark and negating the usual Sanity drain during the night and in the caves. The color cube of echolocation can be changed in the mod's client settings (In Main Menu > Mods > Server Mods > Uncompromising Mode's options). Below are all the available options:

Echolocation Color Cubes

Wathom doesn't lose Sanity from eating raw meat; however, he is normally affected by Monster Meat and alikes.

Instead of using them like other characters, Wathom uses the Ice Staff, Fire Staff and Brightshade Staff with his leap, which removes the advantage of them being ranged; however, Wathom has some additional effects and is more efficient with them, making up for the time that he would have lost thanks to his leap being slower than attacking normally. Below are the new effects:

  • Ice Staff will require half the amount of normal blasts to freeze, while also affecting other mobs around the target.
    • If used to extinguish a fire, Wathom will still leap, but the effect won't be AOE for other fires, it will only affect nearby freezable mobs.
  • The Fire Staff will ignite mobs in an area, instead of only the main target.
    • It can be used to put a structure or flammable item on fire, but they will never be targeted by the AOE effect, which only affects nearby mobs.
  • Brightshade Staff will create a cone of lunar flames similar to the Possessed Varg's attack.

Adrenaline Meter.png Adrenaline[edit | edit source]

Adrenaline Meter.

Wathom has a new meter called Adrenaline, which starts at 25 and has a maximum of 100.

Adrenaline2.png Normal[edit | edit source]

Wathom gains Adrenaline when attacking creatures that have the capability of fighting back. Wathom also gains Adrenaline equal to 25% of all the damage that he takes. When out of combat for 10 seconds, Wathom loses Adrenaline at a rate of 1/second until it returns to 25. As Adrenaline increases, Wathom's combat mechanics scale as well.

Adrenaline4.png Amped Up[edit | edit source]

When Wathom reaches 100 Adrenaline Meter.png, he will become Amped Up. While in this state, Wathom loses 1 Adrenaline Meter.png per second and can't regain more via combat; however, he has his stats locked to their maximum values. This state lasts until Wathom reaches 0 Adrenaline Meter.png. While Amped Up, the player will hear Wathom's unique theme "Heart Attacked!" playing, overriding other tracks that would normally play. The borders of their screen also become tinted red, as if Wathom is taking continuous damage.

Adrenaline1.png Fatigued[edit | edit source]

When Wathom reaches 0 Adrenaline Meter.png, he will become Fatigued. While in this state, Wathom can't regain Adrenaline via combat, but will regenerate Adrenaline at 1/second until it reaches 25. During this he will also move much slower, will take increased damage and will have all of his stats locked to their minimum values. Upon reaching 25 Adrenaline Meter.png, Wathom returns to Normal.

Wathom Shadow Portrait.pngShadow Wathom[edit | edit source]

If Wathom drops to 0 Health Meter.png while Amped Up, he will stay alive, instead transforming himself into Shadow Wathom and locking his health to 1. In this state, Wathom's Adrenaline is reset to 100, and all incoming damage is instead taken from Adrenaline. Wathom is still considered Amped Up in this state, but his damage taken modifier will be reset to 1× and he will die when he reaches 0 Adrenaline Meter.png. This effectively gives Wathom a second chance to defeat his opponents at the cost of guaranteed death. The only way to prevent death as Shadow Wathom is to wear a Lesser Life Amulet.

Wathomteef.png Barking[edit | edit source]

Wathom barking at a pigman, causing it to panic.
Wathom barking at a pigman, causing it to panic.

When above 50 Adrenaline Meter.png or while Amped Up, Wathom can right click to "Bark". Barking sends most creatures around himself and his cursor into a panicked state, dropping aggro to run around aimlessly. Already considering his damage modifier of 2× damage, mobs in panic take 3× damage from Wathom when he is at his Normal state or his Fatigued state, and 6× damage when he is Amped Up or in Shadow Wathom. Mobs that are immune to being panicked, such as bosses and pig guards, will become hostile to Wathom instead. Barking has a cooldown of 12 seconds.

When not Amped Up, barking drains 25 Adrenaline Meter.png, lowering Adrenaline by an entire level. If Amped up or as Shadow Wathom, it will instead replenish 8 Adrenaline Meter.png, prolonging the state. Barking can be used as an effective way to manage Wathom's Adrenaline.

Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

When reaching certain Adrenaline thresholds, Wathom gains up to 5× damage received. Spiders, normally dealing 20 damage, can deal up to 100 damage per hit. Ancient Guardian, normally dealing 100 damage, can deal up to 500 damage in a single hit.

Wathom's damage taken modifier also affects his armor, meaning that at certain damage modifiers, his armor can easily be broken by 1 or 2 hits of a mob. While in Shadow Wathom, the damage taken for his Adrenaline will be 1×, but the damage taken for armors will continue being 5×.

Wathom is a Monster, so Pigs and some other Mobs will attack him on sight.

Wathom is a carnivore, he can only eat meat related foods and goodies. He can also eat raw meat without any consequences; however, he still suffers the consequences of eating monster foods.

When Wathom is revived by a Lesser Life Amulet, he can't be revived by another one for 1 day. This is due to the special interaction with his transformation, Shadow Wathom.

Prototype.png Tips[edit | edit source]

  • Wathom's playstyle is centered around risk and reward; his ridiculous speeds and high damage can take care of threats with minimal resource cost, but any mistake can cost you dearly. If you are not prepared or confident enough to utilize Amp Up, you can Bark to keep your Adrenaline low. Conversely, if you are trying to reap the rewards of Amp Up, try to Bark as often as you can as that prolongs the state, giving you more time.
  • Due to his slow attack speed but high damage, the durability on weapons last twice as long in Wathom's hands whilst keeping their full efficiency. This is especially potent on weapons with low durability such as dark swords or bat bats.
  • Wathom is completely immune to Charlie and is unaffected by the dark. As such, caves and ruins exploration is highly recommended.
  • Since Wathom's attack speed is twice as long compared to other characters but hits for twice the amount of damage, his damage output is practically identical to other characters if he isn't Amped Up or targeting a panicked creature.
  • Hunting rabbits is an excellent source of food in the early game, as Wathom can easily kill them with his leap to satiate his carnivorous appetite.
  • Shadow Wathom takes 1× damage compared to the 5× damage of being normally Amped Up. This means that Shadow Wathom has 100 effective HP since damage is converted into adrenaline loss - assuming that Wathom barks as often as possible to mitigate the natural decay.
  • If Wathom attacks with his Fists, he will not leap. This can be useful for stuff like safely disarming Snap Traps.
  • Early game is extremely dangerous for Wathom. His carnivorous diet means that most early healing options are unavailable to him. That, combined with Wathom's increased damage taken and lack of any self-sustain means that it's very easy to lose all your health with no way to get it back.
    • Spiders are a good way to deal with this. Both from Spider Glands for Healing Salves, and Tents to convert excess Hunger into Health and Sanity. Crockpot boons can also prove invaluable for early healing. Fish Sticks and Tall Scotch eggs in particular are easy recipes with significant health restoration.
  • The Brightshade Staff is extremely powerful when used by Wathom, dealing roughly 500 area-of-effect Planar Damage in a single hit. Prioritising the Celestial Champion is a good strategy in order to obtain access to Brightshade Staffs as early as possible.

Placeholder.png Trivia[edit | edit source]

In-Game[edit | edit source]

A visual concept of what Wathom's unique vision would look like.
  • Wathom's 2020 concept consisted of perks which were scrapped for being too complex and player-unfriendly. They were:
    • Is blind, and can't see objects around him unless they make noise.
    • Has superhearing, which allows him to hear incoming threats earlier as well as detect hidden objects or creatures.
  • Wathom's old design was inspired by the "Flesh armor" from Thorium, a mod for Terraria.
  • Wathom was first introduced in the Calm Before the Storm update, but his first appearance in the mod was in the form of the Wathom Mask.
  • With all the damage vulnerabilities possible in the game, Wathom can take a total of 2916 damage from a single hit.
  • Wathom's damage per attack has a hard-coded maximum value of 600 to compensate for his extreme damage multipliers. This can be configured off, however.
  • When using a Fire Staff, Ice Staff or Brightshade Staff, Wathom leaps at the target and applies the effect on hit instead of firing at a distance. This was initially a bug that the developers turned into a feature because they thought it was funny.
  • Wathom's voice is allegedly "a contrabassoon being played by a werewolf".

Lore[edit | edit source]

  • As mentioned in his compendium biography, Wathom is made up of bones (presumably of an Ancient) and nightmare fuel. This is shown in Wathom's ghost appearance, which is entirely black as opposed to other ghosts' white. Additionally, a purple gem is seen in his skeleton when electrocuted.
  • Wathom's quote for a held mosquito ("My blood, lethal.") suggests that his blood is dangerous to others, presumably due to being made from Nightmare Fuel.
  • Wathom rarely uses conjunctions in his speech, often arranging his sentences in unorthodox ways.
  • Wathom is particularly insightful to how magic works in the Constant, usually commenting on an object's magical properties or functions.
  • Wathom seems to enjoy learning and is willing to find out about anything he currently doesn't. He expresses a desire to learn almost everything there is to be learnt. (Rare Blueprint: "Knowing everything, impossible. Intentions, get close.")
  • Wathom seems to mistrust anything mechanical and views technology as the "path to corruption". Because of this, he dislikes WX-78, who he refers to as "false one".
  • The Ancient Fuelweaver has unique quotes that it will only use when fighting Wathom. These are:
    • "Don't repeat our history, fool."
    • "You will doom yourself as we did."
    • "Retreat while you're still whole, mimic."
    • "Our mistakes shouldn't be repeated."
    • "Let the dead stay buried."
    • "I pity you, mimic."
  • Despite being a carnivore, Wathom was forced to eat plant matter and other unorthodox food items to survive his time in the Abyss. Things he has eaten include light bulbs, lichen, pond algae and bunny puffs.
  • Wathom seems to be colour-blind, which is implied in his quotes for Red Mushrooms ("Red, assumably? Relied sense, auditory; visual lacking.") and Moonlenses ("Color, difficult to recognize.").
  • Wathom's quote for the Shadow Thurible ("Calling. Heavy urge. Submit...") suggests that he is affected by it in the same way as the Reanimated Skeletons and the Ancient Fuelweaver.
  • The Moon seems to have a calming effect on Wathom and to suppress his ability to Amp Up, suggested by his quotes for examining a waxing or full Moon Dial.
  • Out of the foods that he can eat, Wathom seems to have a particular dislike for sweet foods. However, he still enjoys Honey Ham and Honey Nuggets and sees some value in Pumpkin Cookies.
  • Wathom has sensitive hearing and is often distressed by loud sounds, for example, the Tail O' Three Cats ("Loud! Still, hearing impaired!"). He is also able to hear sounds outside of the human hearing range, for example the Lucky Whistle, which is an ability he shares with Wortox.
  • Wathom is afraid of water, as it reminds him of the Abyss. This is referenced in his quotes for many items as well has his announcements for Wetness.
  • Wathom's quote for a sign ("Reading, still student.") suggests that he is still learning how to read. Despite this, in-game he can read signs as well as any other survivor.
  • Wathom's saliva can restore tooth enamel. (Second-Hand Dentures: "Repairs enamel, my saliva.")
  • Wathom's quote for an active BERNIE! ("Not me! Not me!") suggests that BERNIE! targets him as a shadow creature. However, BERNIE! will never attack Wathom in-game.
