Hay Fever is a mechanic originally exclusive to Don't Starve: Hamlet, but ported to DST by Uncompromising Mode with a few changes. Players will begin to suffer the effects of Hay Fever within the second day of Spring and end on the second day of Summer, both changes are indicated by a character quote.

When the player is first beginning to feel the effects of Hay Fever, the edges of the screen will reveal a greenish pattern of leaves and flowers. This pattern will creep toward the center of the screen, and upon reaching the center the player will sneeze, sometimes twice in a row. Sneezes stun the player briefly, drain 3 sanity per sneeze.

Prevention

Ways to mitigate Hay Fever include:

• Wearing a Goose Mask or a Plague Mask.
• Using a Whirly Fan
• Using a Luxury Fan
• Being near an Air Conditioner fueled with Red Caps.
• Sleeping (hay fever will half during sleep).
• Eating any Antihistamine Foods.

Antihistamines are a compound that inhibits the effects of histamines, which trigger allergic and inflammatory reactions. Some foods in the game have antihistaminic properties and will stop the player from sneezing entirely for a set number of time after being consumed. Those food items are the following:

Some mobs will reduce the player's sneeze timer after a successful hit. These include:

• Bee
• Mosquito
• Pollen Mites
• Scorpion

Tips

• Antihistamines can be easily recognized in game by the extra quote characters will say when examining them.
• Hay fever is not as dangerous as other weather events and can be ignored outside of battle with minor consequences.
• The gardening changes brought in the Reap What You Sow update make for an easily available antihistamine source in the form of raw onions.
• As of the Stalking Stuffers update, wearing a Beekeeper Hat will prevent certain creatures from reducing the sneeze timer on hit.
