Agh! An ambush!

Trapdoor Spiders are dangerous inhabitants of the Savanna. They're stronger than Common Spiders, able to leap a considerable distance and kite the player.

They live within Inconspicuous Mounds that are found in savannahs, but only a handful of them are inhabited. This is also the case for Inconspicuous Mounds found in the Hooded Forest.

They can be caught within a rabbit trap (or picked up by Webber when asleep) to get them as an item. While in your inventory they will spoil in 5 days.

Brain.png Behavior

When the player wanders too close to an inhabited Inconspicuous Mound, the spider will immediately jump out and attack, even at Night and during Winter. Some creatures like Beefalo, Koalefants or bosses will not trigger this behavior. After chasing the offending monster or player too far from their mound, Trapdoor Spiders will retreat to an Inconspicuous Mound nearby. This mound does need to be the original one. If the Trapdoor Spider gets killed it will respawn in ???? days within a random mound.

Trapdoor Spiders attack by leaping at the players from considerable distances. They will execute a kitting pattern, similar to that of Pigs.

Webber.png Webber

Trapdoor Spiders can be valuable allies to Webber, as they are pretty efficient in dodging enemy attacks and dealing damage. He can transform other Spiders into Trapdoor Spiders with the Trapdoor Switcherdoodle crafted in the Spider Care Tab.

Spear.png Hunting

Trapdoor Spiders are faster than common Spiders, have twice as much health, and cannot be stunned. It usually takes a half-dozen or more hits to kill one, and it takes fast dodges and rapid strikes to kill them without being wounded. Trapdoor Spiders usually can't outrun a target in full flight.

Trapdoor Spiders' leaps can be dodged by Players who are quick enough to get out of the way. After a Trapdoor Spider has attacked, it cannot leap again for a moment, creating an opportune time to strike 1 or 3 times.

Trapdoor Spiders are vulnerable to Traps, even getting caught in them as they leap through.

Usage & Farming

Although they are tough to fight initially, once learned, kiting individual Trapdoor Spiders becomes much easier than fighting groups of regular spiders and spider warriors. They are also an excellent source of monster meat with their guaranteed 1-2 drops of monster meat. They are not, however, a very good source of Silk.

Trapdoor Spiders cannot be easily farmed or automated, due to the random spawn nature of the Inconspicuous Mounds. If one were to farm them the best option would be to carry a Trap in the inventory, wait for one to spawn and drop the Trap on the ground in the spider's path. Alternatively it is possible to trap every single mound to instantly catch any Trapdoor Spiders that might try to attack the player, but the resource cost is quite high.

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • Trapdoor Spiders were added in in the Goodies Galore update.
  • The first version of Trapdoor Spiders had a different, rounder, sprite which gave them the nickname of "Whoppers".
  • The second version resembled a trapdoor spider from real life, being brown and hairless.
